You Can't Just Dream, You Gotta Believe

Mindset is the most powerful thing we have control of in our lives. What we think about the most, we tend to manifest into reality. It's why I called this post you can't just dream, you gotta believe.

You see, dreaming is a wonderful thing. Walt Disney himself told us that "A dream is a wish your heart makes". Dreams allow us to be creative and think outside of the box. We can dream of traveling, being healthier and rolling in money so we no longer have to worry about bills and being able to afford the travel we are dreaming about. However, if we do not believe that we can actually achieve these dreams, we never will.

Limiting beliefs are more powerful that our dreams ever will be. Our dreams need our belief in order to become a reality, and this is where so many of us become stuck and end up thinking the world is against us. Meanwhile, it's just our mindsets holding us back.

We want to achieve a life where we are happy. A life where we no longer live check to check and can do the things we want to do. But then we follow those thoughts and daydreams up with things like:

  • I am not smart enough to make that happen.

  • I'll never have enough money to do things like that.

  • Only people who have connections can start their own business.

  • I don't have the time to eat healthy or join the gym.

  • I'll never find the right person and will be alone forever because I'm not enough.

You get the picture, right?

We can dream all day long, but if we don't believe that we have the power within us to change the narrative of our story, we will never accomplish a damn thing.

So how do we flip the script on the bullshit stories we tell ourselves?

With visualization and affirmations, of course!

I have covered affirmations briefly in the past, but they are truly a vital part of changing your life and getting to a point where you create the change you spend so much time dreaming about. Team them up with visualization, which I use as a kind of meditation and you will become unstoppable.

What is visualization?

I learned about visualization when I first watched The Secret, on Netflix years ago. It is a vital part of the Law of Attraction, which is simply the ability to attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on.

It's a simple concept when you really start to look at it.

If you are constantly focused on the amount of bills you have, how you can never get ahead in life and bad things always seem to happen to you, guess what, you're going to attract of that negative energy into your life.

Now, if you focus wholeheartedly on your dreams and believe that they will become your reality, you shift to a positive energy and begin to see more of a bright side to life. You will begin to find ways to achieve your goals and see opportunities that you may missed before.

"Where your focus goes, energy flows"

Sounds corny right? If you said yes, knock it off...that's your limiting mindset and we are here to open ourselves up to possibility, positivity and changing our lives. That means we need to change the way we think! Got it? Now let's continue...

Visualization is essentially the act of seeing the goals you want to achieve, as if you have already achieved them. It's not only about seeing the life you wish for, but what it would be like to actually achieve it. It's about feeling what it would be like to have the life you so desperately dream of.

Journaling prompt: What would a day in this new life feel like? (Get specific! What do your surroundings look like? What do you hear? What do you see? What does this new life allow you to do that you couldn't do before? How do you feel in the moment? - Write all of this as you are living the moment...so write it in the present tense...this is key!)

Once you've completed the journaling prompt, you can sit in silence and begin to visualize the picture you just painted and feel what it's like to live that life. You will want to do this in vivid detail. You need to feel it deeply, so don't be surprised if you tear up a bit...that's a sign that you are doing it right and forming a connection to this dream.

I highly recommend doing this for 10-20 mins first thing in the morning. It will help you to set the mindset tone for your day. Then practice it again before you go to bed at night to really allow the feeling of this achievement sync its claws into your subconscious. It's kind of like a mediation session for your goals. You clear out the noise of the day and focus fully on this feeling you have created around your goal.

Now that you are able to visualize the life you want to achieve and feel what it will be like when you do, we can start to change the limiting beliefs that might be standing in your way through affirmations.

What are affirmations?

The dictionary definition is: the assertion that something exists or is true.

So, if you apply what you have learned here so far, you have probably guessed it's about flipping the script on that limiting mindset and creating an open or growth mindset when it comes to your goals.

The way we do this is simple. Take the bullshit narratives we have been telling ourselves and flip them on their heads.

For example:

  • I am not smart enough to make that happen, becomes, I am a work in progress and learning new things excites me.

  • I'll never have enough money to do things like that, becomes, Money comes to me with abundance and ease. I will always have exactly what I need.

  • Only people who have connections can start their own business, becomes, I make new connections and find new people to learn from all the time.

  • I don't have the time to eat healthy or join the gym, becomes, My health is my priority and I make time for it every single day.

  • I'll never find the right person and will be alone forever because I'm not enough, becomes, I am bright, beautiful and enough. Because I learned to value myself, I found my soulmate.

Once you decide on what your affirmations are, you need to write them down daily and say them out loud daily. This exercise is designed to tell your brain that these affirmations have been declared as facts. Facts are things that are true, so if you skip this part you won't rewire your brain to become a dream believing machine...and that would be a shame.

I know these seem 100% corny at first, but the repetition of actually doing this is where the magic happens. Because when we do something over and over, it becomes habit. It worms it's way into our subconscious and that's when it begins to work the magic you've been searching for and change starts to take place.

You can't just dream, you gotta believe!

Your hopes, your dreams and your goals all need to be tied into your feelings. Once you do that, then you have to decide what feels better... feeling anxious and like you'll never ahead in life, stepping out of your comfort zone (which will most likely bring some fear out) and telling yourself on a daily basis that you are strong enough, smart enough and dedicated enough to achieve the life you dream of?

The choice is yours. Will you stay in your limiting mindset and keep telling yourself that you can't do hard things or will you use the tools above to create a growth mindset and turn your dreams into a reality?
